Ubisoft is leaping into the social gaming world with a title called TickTock for Facebook.
The publisher, one of the largest makers of console and handheld titles, has decided that it’s time to expand its reach to social networking.
TickTock, a game conceived late last year and built over the past eight weeks, pits Facebook users against each other and allows them to use their friends’ status updates to build and defuse bombs. It’s basically a live trivia game that uses your friends’ information as answers.
You can build a bomb by answering questions in one minute about your friends’ latest updates and then send the bomb to a friend.
Your friend, if they choose to participate, will have a minute to defuse the bomb by answering the same number of questions about the status updates of their friends.
Fail and your bomb warehouse in the game takes damage. Win and you earn points, bragging rights on your wall and the ability to unlock more bombs. There are cherry bombs, time bombs, nukes and air strikes.
Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America, said Ubisoft needs to expand and chase gamers wherever they are. He said the game will appear on UbiFriends, a Facebook game portal that will host many more games in the future.
This is another sign that Facebook is becoming a major gaming platform. There are about 14,000 games on Facebook and there are about five games with more than 12 million active monthly users.
“We’re seeing the beginning of a trend,” said Gareth Davis, Facebook’s platform manager. “The audience on Facebook is growing so fast and it’s so large, it makes sense for the traditional gamemakers to build for this platform.”
